About Us

The Angel Fund for ALS Research (Angel Fund, Inc.) is an independent non-profit charity (04-3478977) dedicated to supporting ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) investigations at UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester, MA, internationally recognized for its ground-breaking work in the fight against this devastating illness. The laboratory is under the direction of world renowned ALS researcher Dr. Robert H. Brown, Jr.

The Angel Fund considers our researchers and supporters as ‘Angels Over Boston’, working and supporting our mission to find a treatment and cure for ALS.

The Angel Fund accomplishes our mission through fundraising events and campaigns; acting as a conduit to the Day Lab for funds raised by associated events, and through public awareness.

The Angel Fund was established in 1997 by our original angel, Ginny Delvecchio, herself an ALS patient. Ginny knew ALS all too well: both her mother and her brother had died of the same illness. Ginny’s spirit prevailed, however, and she worked tirelessly raising awareness of ALS and funds for research until the disease robbed her of the ability to do so. She died of ALS in August of 1998. Ginny’s family, Ginny’s cousins; the Nigro family and the Kennedy family have carry the torch to find a cure for ALS.

The Angel Fund has attracted growing support. It is infused with the energy and commitment of people, many of them personally touched by the tragedy of ALS, who are determined to prevail against this disease.

The Angel Fund is special.

We are not a national charity – we are local. We have very low overhead and administrative costs. Our offices are located in the law firm of Nigro Pettipet and Lucas, courtesy of Directors Jan and Eugene Nigro. That means that The Angel Fund has no rent, no utility bills, no high-paid executives. Angel Fund President Rich Kennedy and the board members are not paid.

Why are they so passionate?

Because most have lived through the heartbreak of seeing their loved one live with ALS and lose their battle to this horrific disease. They have made a commitment to support Dr. Brown and his researchers until a cure is found, the goal of our original Angel, Ginny DelVecchio. They have a sense of urgency to find a treatment and cure by supporting the gene silencing therapy. We know the patients and their families – and the patients know us.

The Angel Fund Mission

Our mission is to support ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) research and scientific investigations at the Cecil B. Day Laboratory by raising funds through events, campaigns, foundation grants and numerous other community outreach activities, to aid in finding a cause, treatment and cure for ALS.
